Police are seeking to upgrade charges stemming from an incident in which a man died Wednesday after being shot during a physical altercation in Surprise.

The Surprise Police Department responded to a call about a man being shot, according to police, in the area of 168th Avenue and Jenan Drive on July 2. Responding officers said in reports that they observed a large house party, with multiple witnesses on the street directing officers to the victim, 18-year-old De’Von Jones.

Surprise police said that witnesses recounted a physical altercation between Jones and an adult male, before 18-year-old Daniel Majok pulled out a handgun and fired it multiple times at Jones.

When officers arrived, Jones had wounds to his upper torso and was transported to a hospital, police said.
