🔊 Just Announced: Candace Laing, FCPHR will become the new President and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Canada’s largest business network, on September 1. “I strongly believe that solutions to our greatest economic challenges are found at the community level, and I want to ensure we are focused on the critical role local chambers, boards of trade and businesses play in our economy. The positive influence businesses have on the lives of everyday Canadians is the grassroots thinking that should inform federal policymaking and help create a better life for all Canadians.”

  • A work stoppage at our major railways would significantly limit Canadians’ access to goods and products, driving up prices and exacerbating affordability challenges. Along with over 110 chambers of commerce and business associations, we’ve sent a joint letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Minister of Labour and Seniors Steven MacKinnon, and Minister of Transport and Quebec Lieutenant Pablo Rodriguez, urging them to take immediate action to prevent this disruption in Class 1 railways, safeguard the well-being of Canadians and uphold Canada’s reputation as a reliable trading partner. My statement on the EV tariff question in Canada: our cyber integrity and essential manufacturers are vulnerable to malicious disruption. Canada has to apply an economic security lens to this, and consider how our most important trading partners have already taken action. “Canada’s growing EV sector is at risk of being undermined by Chinese EVs entering our market. We’ve seen China repeatedly and systematically undercut global supply chains and markets through unfair, non-market practices. And the potential for significant cybersecurity vulnerabilities in EVs needs to be better understood and addressed by government with the close involvement of industry partners. The U.S. and the E.U. have already taken steps to address this issue…” Read the full statement at the link below: https://lnkd.in/gV3SnnJn

Funny how a few months ago we were hoping for weak growth to quell inflation and convince the Bank of Canada to cut rates. Now, Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem has highlighted the need to boost economic activity. The Governor is shifting focus from prevention to treatment. The medicine is rate cuts and more are needed. Today's GDP, although bringing the second quarter estimate to 2.2% annualized growth, is still operating below potential. The Canadian economy is feeling the pinch from higher interest rates, particularly impacting the retail sector. Despite this, manufacturing and pipeline transportation lifted the second-quarter GDP estimate above the Bank of Canada's forecast. However, this growth was influenced by temporary factors rather than a shift in momentum at this stage. With the Bank of Canada noting downside risks to inflation, any upward move in economic activity is positive news amidst broader challenges. More in my latest commentary:
