Fall in My Garden and Neighborhood

Front angle view of yard with fall leaves

I leave the leaves in my yard for the benefit of insects and frogs that will live in the leaf litter — looks messy but less work and better for the wildlife, which are my priority!

As the election rages on, I’ve been attempting to distract myself with a little garden photography. I try to make a special effort to appreciate fall in the garden since we have a long, dark winter ahead — one that will likely feel longer and darker than usual in the absence of in-person celebrations. I now have a fairly good number of evergreen plants, like my sword ferns, hellebore, euphorbia, flax, and rhododendron, but the garden does still feel a little gray and dim without the bright yellow and purple foliage on some of my deciduous plants. I planted bulbs, so I’ll get some early season color, but it’s still a good practice to appreciate what I have when I have it.

The brilliant red of our laceleaf japanese maple always surprises me each fall!

I love how these maple leaves fade softly from bright green to pale yellow

Mottled red, yellow and black leaves in triplets

I took this picture yesterday and can’t remember if it’s a volunteer salmonberry I’ve allowed to live or the last burst of the goatsbeard (both PNW native)

Yellow spiral bundles of leaves turning purple at the tips, and some green ones visible beneath

This yellow smoke bush is one of the delights of my yard from spring through fall

Water beads on two bunches of a small euphorbia plant with a whorl of sea-green leaves

I never got around to planting this volunteer euphorbia after removing it to a pot last spring, but it seems to be doing all right!

New Zealand Flax leaves are quite sharp!

This flower in my neighbor’s yard missed the memo that it’s November ;)
