Marilyn Monroe has been gone for over sixty years, and yet people are still talking about her. What, exactly, is the spell she casts on so many? Stunning, exciting to watch, incredibly famous, Monroe lived a very public life and died young, with a sad suddenness. All of this is true, and yet there is so much more to her story.

On Marilyn Monroe: An Opinionated Guide looks past the sensation to the real legacy--her richly varied body of work. Both during her life and following her death, Monroe was dismissed as more of a phenomenon than an actor, often an object of ridicule instead of a performer whose work could be taken seriously. Even when films such as The Seven Year Itch and Some Like It Hot saw immense success, Monroe seldom got her due as the inventive and accomplished performer she was. The truth that lay behind the dazzling surface was that she was one of the hardest working of actors. Rigorously applying both skillful technique and an inherent charisma, she was able to create truly unforgettable performances.

In this lively guide, Richard Barrios looks beyond the ballyhoo and legend at Monroe's best-known films, and some that even today remain obscure. Besides her films, it also addresses the work she did on television and the stage, as well as her underrated abilities as a vocalist. Both an informative study and a perceptive critical assessment,
On Marilyn Monroe: An Opinionated Guide gives this brilliant performer the attention she desired--that of an artist whose work deserves both examination and celebration.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Eye-opening and always engaging... Barrios has fashioned a wonderful biography of Marilyn Monroe." -- Leah K. Huey, Library Journal

"Beautifully written" -- Christopher Bray, Mail on Sunday

"So revolutionary - and so urgently needed...a healthy corrective to preordained, punitive accounts of her life." -- Tim Robey, The Telegraph

"This eloquent and thoughtful book focuses on Marilyn Monroe's work - yes, her work, not her private life and not her mysterious death...With its mouthwatering prose, this book achieves the desired effect of luring us back to Monroe's films, the good and the bad." -- Ysenda Maxtone Graham, The Times

"...beautifully written ...critical biography [that] takes its subject very seriously indeed." -- The Mail on Sunday

If you are looking for a well-researched, comprehensive look at Marilyn's acting career written with love, wit and insight, look no further. Marilyn's personal troubles are written about only to provide context. This is a celebration of her WORK, and even if you disagree with Barrios' opinions (I didn't), Marilyn fans should rejoice that her acting talents are finally being explored in a serious way, though with plenty of the author's trademark humor and occasional snark (I laughed out loud at his description of LOVE HAPPY as "...not a film where the seams show; instead, they dominate."). This was a joy to read, but I also recommend the audiobook, warmly read by the author.

I would expect a book about the lovely Marilyn Monroe to include a lot of pictures of her, in various movies and stage work she's done, but instead it's just a lot of words about said work. I was disappointed. I did try to determine if there were any photos by reading the reviews but no one said so one way or the other. So in case you are like me and hoping for photos and trying to determine if there are any, here is the answer: there are no pictures here of the lovely Marilyn to make the biography worthwhile. Boo on them.

5.0 out of 5 stars a journey through Marilyn's career
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 27, 2023
I was a bit apprehensive about downloading this, fearing it was going to be some dry academic tome obsessing over the minutiae of Marilyn's films. But it's a lot better than that. This book very much focuses on Marilyn's career, and only touches on her troubled private life in so much as how it impacted her work. The book is in chronological order, starting with her blink-and-you'll-miss-her appearance in 'Scudda Hoo Scudda Hay' and all the way up to the doomed 'Something's Got To Give'. Along the way we see the best of Marilyn, with 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes', 'Some Like It Hot' and 'The Seven Year Itch', and the not-so-good, such as the disappointing 'Let's Make Love'. Found myself agreeing with the author that 'Bus Stop' hasn't aged well (mainly because of the story, not Marilyn's performance), and that there are bits to like in 'The Prince And The Showgirl', which seemed to be hampered by its stage-bound origins. Found myself wishing that Marilyn could have simply accepted that she was a gifted screen comedienne, with a magic all of her own, and not tried so hard to be accepted as A Serious Actor. It's a shame that she wasn't able to capitalise on her huge success in 'Some Like It Hot', but by that time her reputation for being difficult to work with had deterred too many other talents from working with her. 'The Misfits' - trying way too hard to be arty - was a sad and doleful end to a sparkling career. I found this book quite unputdownable, and would recommend it for any Marilyn fans.
