Over the past few years, Boeing has consistently struggled financially, while its rival Airbus has returned to profitability. Boeing's troubles began with the 737 Max, which was involved in two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019. These incidents led to a lengthy grounding of the aircraft, resulting in billions of dollars in losses from fines and canceled orders. Despite eventually resolving the 737 Max issues, Boeing's problems continued with the 787 Dreamliner, which faced production delays and further damaged the company's financial performance. Boeing has faced significant losses, including nearly $12 billion in 2020 and additional multi-billion-dollar losses in subsequent quarters. The company's financial struggles have been attributed to ongoing safety issues, cost-cutting measures, and leadership instability. Meanwhile, Airbus has been profitable since 2021, with its last major setback in Q4 2019 when it paid a substantial fine in a corruption case. Despite challenges during the pandemic, Airbus has managed to stay in the black, while Boeing continues to grapple with its ongoing difficulties.

In 2019, 38 of around 200 countries analyzed by UN Tourism saw over ten million tourist arrivals, with nine doubling their numbers since 2010, particularly in Asia. A Statista chart shows seven of the top ten growth areas between 2010 and 2019 are in Asia, led by Japan (270%), Vietnam (261%), and India (210%). Portugal, Greece, and Mexico also saw significant increases. Post-COVID-19, many countries haven't fully recovered. Taiwan's visitors dropped 84% from 2010 to 2022, with South Korea and Japan also seeing declines. Thailand had the most tourist arrivals in 2019 with 24 million, followed by Japan and Mexico. Tourism, contributing 9% to global GDP in 2023, faces overtourism issues. European cities like Amsterdam and Venice are taking steps to manage tourist numbers, while places in Thailand and Indonesia, such as Ko Phi Phi Leh, Ko Tao, and Bali, struggle with increased tourism despite its economic benefits.

Simone Biles has wrapped up her final events at the Olympics, winning a silver medal in the floor event today, with Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade placing first, and missing out on the podium for the balance beam competition. Widely considered one of the GOATs of gymnastics, Biles ranks among the most decorated Olympic female gold medalists of all time. At the 2024 Paris Games, she won three golds in total: in the individual all-around, the team all-around and the women's vault. This brings her total to an impressive seven gold Olympic medals over the course of her career. As the following chart based on data compiled by Encyclopædia Britannica shows, four of the world’s top ten performing female Olympians have been gymnasts, two of whom have represented the United States. But it is Larisa Latynina, the former Soviet artistic gymnast, who holds the record for the most Olympic gold medals by anyone in the sports’ history, male or female. Another notable winner for the U.S. is swimmer Katie Ledecky, who rose to join Latynina at the top of the chart on Saturday, after winning the 800m freestyle final at the Paris Games. This brings her total medal count to 14, having won nine golds, four silver and one bronze over the course of her career. An additional three of these were from this year’s Olympics: gold in the 1500m free, silver in the 4x200m freestyle relay and bronze in the 400m.

In a press release ahead of World Breastfeeding Week (August 1 to 7), the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the global rate of exclusive breastfeeding for infants under 6 months has increased by over 10 percent in the past twelve years, now reaching 48 percent. However, sales of breast milk substitutes have more than doubled in the last twenty years. While breastfeeding offers numerous benefits, some studies suggest these benefits diminish when considering socioeconomic factors. Breastfeeding provides essential nutrients, energy, and immune protection that formula lacks. In developing countries, breast milk is particularly crucial due to water safety concerns and the risk of formula contamination. Despite this, formula is aggressively marketed with exaggerated claims, and the baby milk industry spends heavily on lobbying. The WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months and continued breastfeeding with complementary feeding until at least 2 years. UNICEF data shows that breastfeeding rates are highest in South Asia and Eastern and Southern Africa (around 60 percent) and lowest in North America (26 percent) and Eastern Europe and Central Asia (36 percent). Western Europe lacks standardized data, but breastfeeding rates are generally low.

Simone Biles, the 27-year-old Team USA gymnast, has added three more gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, bringing her total to eleven Olympic medals and 30 World Championship medals. Hailed as one of the greatest gymnasts ever, Biles is the most decorated gymnast in U.S. and global history. Born in Columbus, Ohio, and raised in Texas by her grandparents, Biles began gymnastics at age six. She debuted internationally at the American Cup in 2013 and became the all-around champion at the USA Gymnastics National Championships at 16, the first African American woman to do so. Biles has received numerous accolades, including Sportswoman of the Year by the Women's Sports Foundation, Female Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom at 25, the youngest to receive it. Her first Olympics were the 2016 Rio Games, winning four golds and one bronze. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, delayed to 2021, she won a silver and a bronze but withdrew due to the “twisties,” prioritizing her mental health and taking a two-year break from competition. An advocate for mental health, Biles spoke out against former U.S. gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar in 2018. She returned to win her eighth all-around title at the 2023 U.S. National Championships and more medals at the World Championships in Antwerp. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, she led Team USA to gold again. Biles has five gymnastics moves named after her and has shifted the sport's culture towards better mental health support. She emphasizes representation and inspires young athletes by being herself, stating in a 2020 Vogue interview the importance of seeing diverse role models in sports.

Japanese benchmark index Nikkei 225 on Monday saw its biggest one-day drop since 1987, erasing all of 2024's gains and more. The index dropped 12.4 percent to 31,458 points from 35,910 points. Earlier this year, it had surpassed the 40,000 point mark for the first time in a surprising stock market rally that had continued despite the generally weak Japanese and world economy. The AI boom boosted Japanese semiconductor stocks more than expected, contributing majorly to the good results then. Now, the Japanese market reacted most strongly in a global stock market rout over the possibility of the U.S. economy entering a recession. On Friday, the U.S. Labor Department had announced that hiring had unexpectedly slowed down in July, stoking fears of negative GDP growth on the next release of this data later this month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1.5 percent on the news, while the S&P 500 lost 1.8 percent. In mid-February, the Nikkei index had first surpassed levels from before the country’s devastating assets bubble burst in 1989/1990, from which the economy is thought to have never recovered. Around the same time, the Japanese economy slid from the world’s third-largest to its fourth-largest – having been overtaken by Germany's - to much international coverage. While Japanese stocks were aided by the weak yen then, the currency now strengthened to its highest level against the U.S. dollar since January, dampening international buying projects of Japanese stocks.
