While Golden Globes’ MO has been becoming the first to recognize new show, the SAG Awards have been pretty unpredictable, often not acknowledging breakout freshmen until their second season.
That was the case last year with Amazon Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which was snubbed completely by the SAG Awards last December before sweeping the Golden Globes and the Emmys. A year later, the SAG Awards are catching up, making Mrs. Maisel the most nominated series with four noms, including comedy ensemble.

Fellow award-winning comedy series that was left out in the cold by the SAG Awards in Season 1 that landed a nomination for its second season was FX’s Atlanta though it was only recognized for its ensemble and not star Donald Glover.
Recent first-year series that did not land a single SAG Award nom for their first season before triumphing with multiple wins include comedies Veep, Orange Is the New Black and Transparent, and drama Homeland.
Add to the list of freshman snubs Prime Video’s new drama Homecoming starring Julia Roberts, which was shut out after a couple of other awards recognitions. But first-year comedies Barry and The Kominsky Method defied the “freshman SAG Award curse”, each landing three noms, including best ensemble.
While the SAG Awards tend to stick with their favorites til the end of their shows — Alec Baldwin received eight nominations for 30 Rock, winning seven times — some longtime faves were surprisingly left out this year, including Shameless star William H. Macy, who won in three of the last four year, including the last two years in a row, and fellow multiple winner Uzo Aduba of Orange Is the New Black, which was shut out completely, as was Westworld. Also omitted was Benedict Cumberbatch, a six-time former nominee, for Patrick Melrose.

As it has often been the case, there was a wild card with a show from a genre that often gets overlooked scoring first nomination. Just like Patrick J. Adams nabbed a SAG Award nomination in 2012 for USA Network’s popcorn legal drama Suits, John Krasinski did today for Amazon’s actioneer Jack Ryan.

Two series with strong awards momentum this fall hit a bump at the SAG Awards, The Good Place and the recently departed The Americans, which could not repeat their strong Golden Globes showing, with the NBC comedy yet to get a SAG Award nom while the FX drama’s final season nabbed an ensemble nod but not individual ones for stars Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell.
Among the networks, Netflix extended its streak as the most nominated outlet for a third consecutive year, widening the gap with No. 2 to the biggest yet. Netflix nabbed 15 total noms, almost twice as many as its nearest competitor, Prime Video (8). HBO had 6 noms; FX had 4. Last year, Netflix had 19, followed by HBO (12) and NBC (3). And two years ago, Netflix (17) also was followed by HBO (13).
