‘Afraid’ Trailer: John Cho & Family Terrorized By New Smart Home Tech In Columbia/Blumhouse Thriller 

Columbia Pictures and Blumhouse on Wednesday unveiled the first trailer for Afraid, their thriller formerly titled They Listen, starring John Cho and Katherine Waterston, which is slated for release in theaters on August 30.

Written and directed by Chris Weitz (About a Boy), Afraid watches as Curtis (Cho) and his family are selected to test a revolutionary new home device: a digital family assistant called AIA. Taking smart home to the next level, once the unit and all its sensors and cameras are installed in their home, AIA seems able to do it all. She learns the family’s behaviors and begins to anticipate their needs. And she can make sure nothing — and no one — gets in her family’s way.

Also starring Katherine Waterston, Havana Rose Liu, Lukita Maxwell, David Dastmalchian and Keith Carradine, the AI-themed thriller is produced by Jason Blum, Weitz and Andrew Miano. Beatriz Sequeira, Paul O. Davis, Dan Balgoyen and Britta Rowings served as executive producers.

Most recently releasing Bad Boys: Ride or Ride, which has racked up over $333 million at the worldwide box office and counting, Sony’s upcoming slate includes Greg Berlanti’s Apple pic Fly Me to the Moon (July 12) starring Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson, children’s book adaptation Harold and the Purple Crayon (August 2), and the romance It Ends With Us (August 9) starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, to name just a few titles.

Others set to open the weekend of the 30th include Sean McNamara’s Reagan starring Dennis Quaid, Lionsgate’s Los Angeles riots pic 1992 starring Scott Eastwood and the late Ray Liotta, Purdie Distribution’s Tokyo Cowboy and Blue Fox Entertainment’s romantic drama Take My Hand.
