Amazon on Wednesday unveiled the first trailer for My Spy The Eternal City, the sequel to its family action comedy My Spy, starring Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman, which broke out as an unexpected hit amid the Covid pandemic in 2020.
Picked up from STXfilms during the theatrical shutdown, the original film introduced audiences to JJ (Bautista), a hardened CIA operative who found himself at the mercy of precocious nine-year-old Sophie (Coleman), after being sent undercover to surveil her family. Written by Jon & Erich Hoeber (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) and directed by Pete Segal (Get Smart), it came in as the third most-watched of its year on SVOD according to ScreenEngine, following Disney+’s Hamilton and Prime Video’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

In the sequel, slated for a global rollout on Prime Video on July 18, a now teenage Sophie convinces JJ to chaperone her school choir trip to Italy where they both unwittingly end up pawns in an international terrorist plot targeting CIA Chief David Kim (Ken Jeong) and his son, Collin (Taeho K) — who also happens to be Sophie’s best friend.
In addition to Jeong, Kristen Schaal reprises in the new film, with Anna Faris, Craig Robinson, Flula Borg and K among those coming on for new roles. Segal returned to direct from his script written with Erich and Jon Hoeber, having also penned the story alongside the duo.
Producers on the sequel included Chris Bender and Jake Weiner for Good Fear Content, Bautista and Jonathan Meisner for Dogbone Entertainment, Segal, Robert Simonds, and Gigi Pritzker for Madison Wells. Jon and Erich Hoeber exec produced alongside Adam Fogelson, Sam Brown, and Madison Wells’ Rachel Shane.
