The 2021 United States coup d'état attempt is an ongoing [1] coup d'état attempt, instigated by a group of Donald Trump supporters attacking the United States Capitol building. Protestors smashed windows and breached the normally highly secure facility, entering both the United States Senate and House of Representatives chambers.[2]Media[3] and members of congress[4][5]have called it an insurrection, rebellion, sedition, or coup d'état.

One person was shot, with the state of their injuries or their identity currently unknown.[6]

Donald Trump released a video, in which he continued to fraudulently claim the election was rigged, but told the group to "go home" because "we want peace". [1]

Representatives Ilhan Omar and Ayanna Pressley have called for Trump's immediate impeachment and removal by Congress when it can reconvene. [2] The National Association of Manufacturers has also called for Trump's immediate removal from office, calling on Vice President Mike Pence [3] to act.

The international community has also reacted. The Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, released a statement, saying "What we are seeing now is an attack on democracy. President Trump and many members of Congress have a great responsibility for what is happening now. The democratic process of electing a president must be respected."[4] The Turkish state-run news agency Anadolu Agency posted a statement saying "Turkey invites all parties in US to use moderation, common sense to overcome this domestic political crisis". [5] NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said "Shocking scenes in Washington, D.C. The outcome of this democratic election must be respected.". [6]
