Last May, our technical directors, Jon Meléndez Rey Rey and Jose Antonio Medrano Jimenez Antonio Medrano Jiménez, participated in the webinar organized by Ammonia Energy Association to discuss our ammonia cracking technology, which uses a membrane reactor design to produce fuel-cell purity hydrogen from ammonia. Now in this interesting article Kevin Rouwenhorst, AEA Technology Manager, summarises some of the key points of this meeting, such as the background of the cracking technologies, and how from H2SITE we have been commercializing catalytic membrane reactors for ammonia cracking since 2019 with different applications, such as gas conversion from different feedstocks or hydrogen “deblending”. This article also discusses Ammogen, our project at Tyseley Energy Park in Birmingham, which aims to produce 200 kilograms of fuel-cell grade hydrogen per day, using our catalytic membrane reactor. Thanks to Ammonia Energy Association for highlighting our development plans to meet future demand for ammonia cracking, both for decentralized and large-scale applications. Ammonia cracking in H2SITE membrane reactors Background on cracking Various ammonia cracking technologies are currently being developed. Specifications depend on the purity requirements, production scale needed, and other factors. Most of the well-known ammonia licensors already have an ammonia cracking technology based on multi-tubular reactors with burners (similar in concept to a steam methane reformer for hydrogen production). Such technology is already used at large-scale for heavy water production. The output of such multi-tubular ammonia crackers is a mixture of about 75% hydrogen, 25% nitrogen, and residual ammonia and water (0.2-0.5 wt.% in anhydrous ammonia). Purification of hydrogen typically occurs with a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) system. Intermediate ammonia (and water) removal is sometimes installed just before the PSA. Palladium-based membranes Catalytic membrane reactors are a different technology option under development for ammonia cracking. A benefit of this technology is that the ammonia cracking reaction is integrated with hydrogen purification via a porous membrane. As the hydrogen permeates through the membrane and the hydrogen concentration decreases on the reaction side, the otherwise equilibrium-limited ammonia cracking reaction is pushed further toward completion, producing additional hydrogen and nitrogen. Such Palladium-based membranes allow for hydrogen generation at temperatures above 300°C, where hydrogen permeates through the membrane via solution-diffusion. Palladium-based membranes benefit from a near-infinite hydrogen permeability ratio (versus ammonia and nitrogen), resulting in fuel cell grade hydrogen without the need for further purification steps. The high permeability and selectivity ratio for hydrogen makes Palladium-based membranes competitive versus organic and ceramic membranes. However, a challenge for membrane-based systems is the pressure drop over the membrane, which means the purified hydrogen may require an additional compression step. A Palladium-based, catalytic membrane reactor design was demonstrated by Eindhoven University of Technology in 2009 in collaboration with Spanish membrane developer TECNALIA Research & Innovation. Experiments showed that more than 86% of the H2 fed to the system in the form of ammonia was recovered from the membrane reactor, with a minimum product purity of 99.998%. Over more than 600 hours of test operations, the membrane reactor exhibited stable behavior, with consistent H2 purity and H2 recovery values. And, it was this very demonstration that provided the foundation for H2SITE to begin its commercialization effort. Osama Fawzy Georgy HENEIN, MBA

Next week ➡️ On 1-3 July, our Business Development Manager, Ilona Grzyb, CPIM will participate on behalf of H2SITE at the Global Energy Transition Congress and Exhibition(GET) in Milan. GET will become a vital platform for networking, knowledge exchange, and showcasing low-carbon solutions and decarbonization technologies. Therefore, it will be an honor to be part of this meeting and share with the main actors in the industry. Facing the critical challenges to decarbonize industry and accelerate the global energy transition is a priority for us. Unfortunately, transporting Hydrogen is currently very costly, adding between 80-300% to the final cost to end users. The biggest opportunity to reduce these costs is to transport blended hydrogen in existing natural gas grids or in the form of hydrogen energy carriers, like ammonia and methanol Here at H2SITE, we're pioneering a groundbreaking technology to tackle the challenge of hydrogen transportation for our clients. Discover more about our innovative technologies: https://h2site.eu/ You can also make an appointment with Ilona Grzyb, CPIM to learn first-hand all the details about our solutions: https://lnkd.in/dKqdxXvn #GETcongress #Hydrogen #CleanEnergy #Decarbonization #SustainableFuture #EnergyTransition

📣H2SITE has successfully commissioned the world’s first on-board ammonia cracking system, generating high-purity hydrogen coupled with a pem fuel cell 🚢 Maritime transport accounts for 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it a crucial sector for decarbonization efforts. Ammonia cracking is gaining traction as a potential hydrogen carrier for onboard applications. 🌊 H2SITE has successfully validated the first ammonia cracker to produce high-purity hydrogen for onboard power generation using a PEM fuel cell. An integrated membrane reactor has been installed and operated on board of the BERTHA B supply ship, sailing the shores of the Gulf of Biscay. H2SITE’s membrane reactors make sure all the ammonia is transformed, while delivering a high purity hydrogen to the fuel cell in a single process step. During navigation, as part of the H2OCEAN project, H2SITE’s cracker has successfully powered the ship's auxiliary services. This project marks a crucial milestone for H2SITE in the process of decarbonizing maritime transport. 🌏 Read the full news : https://lnkd.in/d2wDBjrk More info : https://www.h2site.eu/es/ #H2SITE #AmmoniaCracking #HydrogenInnovation #Decarbonization #SustainableShipping #ammonia #membranereactors #pureHydrogen
