It's Action Indonesia day! A day to celebrate the amazing creatures of Indonesia - especially the #babirusa, #anoa, #banteng, and #sumatrantiger! All four of these species can only be found in Indonesia and are all also under threat of extinction. Action Indonesia is an international collaboration working together to conserve these species using the One Plan Approach. Join us in raising awareness for these amazing animals by learning more, and supporting conservation efforts like the Action Indonesia Global Species Management Plans. Chester Zoo welcomed one of the rarest animals on the planet, a male onager foal! Chester Zoo is the only zoo in the UK, and one of very few in the world, to work with the onager due to the challenges of breeding and caring for them. Related to the domestic donkey, the onager is an Asiatic wild ass. They live in two small, protected areas in Iran and have suffered from illegal poaching, overgrazing, drought and disease. The species is listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) with only 600 remaining in the wild.

Adelaide Zoo welcomed an 11 year old male Komodo Dragon! Komodo Dragons are listed as endangered to extinction by the IUCN Red List. It is estimated there are less than 1,400 Komodo Dragons left across the forests and beaches of Indonesian islands. It is predicted that in the next five decades 70% of current habitat could be lost due to rising global temperatures and subsequent sea levels. Since 2018, Zoos SA’s support has helped on-ground conservation efforts including research, the purchase of camera traps, nest monitoring, and community awareness programmes for people residing in Komodo National Park.

The Deep welcomed two blonde ray pups! Blonde rays are a native skate species, listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. They can be found all around the UK and like to live close to the sea floor in sandy areas. Their light colour and pattern allows them to blend in to avoid predators.
