Anne Hathaway and Anna Wintour nod to The Devil Wears Prada in Gutenberg! cameo

"That's all."

The Gutenberg! Producer trucker hat? Yeah, she is.

On Wednesday, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway cameo'd as Broadway producers in stage show Gutenberg! — and the two even winked at their connection via The Devil Wears Prada.

Gutenberg! follows fictional aspiring Broadway writers, Bud (Josh Gad) and Doug (Andrew Rannells), as they attempt to pitch an audience and producers on their show, Gutenberg, a heavily fictionalized account of the life of Johannes Gutenberg. At the end of the show, each night, a different celebrity appears as a "Broadway producer" to award them a contract.

"Oh, Bud! Doug!," Hathaway cried. "This show is fantastic. We don't need to hear another note!"

"I'm a very famous Broadway producer," Wintour added. "And this is my assistant."

Hathaway did a double take at Wintour after being called her assistant, quipping, "Still?"

Though Hathaway never actually worked as Wintour's assistant, she did star as Andy Sachs in 2006's The Devil Wears Prada, a young woman who nabs a coveted job as an assistant to powerful fashion editor, Miranda Priestley (Meryl Streep). The film is based on the 2003 novel by Lauren Weisberger, and the character of Miranda has long been rumored to be based on Wintour, given Weisberger's history as a personal assistant to the Vogue editor.

"I wasn't interested in doing a biopic on Anna," Streep told EW during a 2021 cast reunion. "I was interested in her position in her company. I wanted to take on the burdens she had to carry, along with having to look nice every day."

Screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna also remembered struggling to find anyone to speak to her about the inner workings of Vogue because of Wintour's reach. "I had enormous trouble finding anyone in the fashion world who'd talk to me, because people were afraid of Anna and Vogue, not wanting to be blackballed," she said. "There was one person who spoke to me, whose name I will never divulge, who read it and said, 'The people in this movie are too nice. No one in that world is too nice. They don't have to be, and they don't have time to be.' After that, I did a pass to make everyone a bit busier and meaner."

Wintour did end up attending a private screening of the film, but she has never publicly commented on the movie — until this winking nod on Broadway.

The fashion icon concluded by saying, "I hold in my hands a Broadway contract." And when Bud went in for a hug, she clapped her hands together and said, "That's all," parroting one of Streep's most iconic lines in the movie.

Hathaway and Wintour are the most recent celebs to grace the stage of the James Earl Jones Theatre. Other "producers" have included Lin-Manuel Miranda, Billy Crystal, Idina Menzel, John Stamos, Will Ferrell, and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Gutenberg! The Musical! runs through Jan. 28.
