The Super

By far the best thing about this misconceived comedy is Joe Pesci’s title performance: He plays a gleefully greedy slumlord sentenced by the court to serve as live-in super of his own firetrap. The ordeal starts out nasty enough, with snarling rats, gun-toting tenants, and erupting pipes. But it soon gets trite and predictable on its way to a phony feel-good ending. Despite such Hollywood glossifying, The Super bombed at the box office. But it’s worth the price of a rental, if only to keep tabs on Pesci’s growing gallery of comic rogues. C+
