What Anna Quindlen is reading

I’m reading The Unredeemed Captive, by John Demos, a history professor at Yale. It’s a wonderful story, and I have to emphasize story, because it’s very much written that way. It’s about a case taken from colonial documents concerning the 7-year-old daughter of a Puritan minister who was captured by Indians and never came back. Or at least that’s what it looks like so far-I haven’t finished the book. I also just finished The Alienist, by Caleb Carr, which, as everybody knows, is about a serial killer in 1896 New York who is killing boy prostitutes. I’m also reading Little Women again because I’m writing an introduction to it for Little, Brown. It makes me know how an outspoken, not particularly ”girly” girl could make her way in the world as a writer. I learned how to do that from that book.
