Johnny Depp wants to play Hamlet on stage

Johnny Depp wants to play Hamlet on stage -- The star feels like the role fits his outcast and oddball character choices

Keanu Reeves did it. So did Ralph Fiennes. Now Johnny Depp says he wants to do it too. Star in Hamlet, that is. ”When I was working with Marlon Brando [on Don Juan DeMarco], he said, ‘Why don’t you take a year off and play Hamlet?”’ says Depp. ”I was very honored. It’s something I would like to do.” Depp adds that Shakespeare’s angst-ridden prince would be right in tune with his past roles. ”With the characters I’ve played, [what] interests me is that they are considered outcasts, oddballs,” says Depp, who’ll appear next as an accountant in Paramount’s Nick of Time. ”That’s something I identify with.” Though Depp adds that he’s anxious to do theater, a spokesman for the actor says playing the great Dane may just be wishful talk inspired by the Wild One’s comment: ”As far as we know, that’s as far as it’s gone.”
