Screenwriter J.F. Lawton (Pretty Woman, Under Siege) combines romance and action in The Hunted, the tale of a businessman targeted by, believe it or not, ninja assassins. Christopher Lambert is likable as the normal guy who gets a crash course in swordplay (though you’d think he’d gotten decapitation out of his system with the Highlander series). But the star’s effort is wasted: Writer-director Lawton screws up his own plot twists with a plodding artiness, continually applying the brakes on a film that yearns to go into overdrive. C
