The Prophecy

Mixing one of B horror’s lamest clichés (the failed priest-turned-cop character) with an innovative plot device (a long-missing chapter from the Bible), The Prophecy is an old-fashioned thriller with art-house pretensions. A vampirish Walken, typecast as the renegade archangel Gabriel, needs the spirit of an evil military genius to win his war against heaven, while Stoltz shows up as an angel on God’s side. With its climax taking place at a folksy Native American exorcism, the movie appears to emerge as the model for X-Files: The Motion Picture. B+
