Dances With Wolves

Kevin Costner’s Oscar-winning directorial debut Dances With Wolves — attacked during its making and now seen as precursor to his last few bloated epics — gets a suitably ungilded treatment. The THX-approved transfer does justice to the thundering buffalo and John Barry’s majestic score. The only bonus is the exemplary audio commentary from Costner and producer Jim Wilson, who flavor the drama of making the movie on a $15 million budget with some fine anecdotes (a charging buffalo in one shot is actually rushing toward the Oreo cookies that it loves) as well as earnest respect for the Native American actors and crew. Movie and extras: B+
