”Remember when Bruce first got cast in ‘Die Hard,”’ says Reiner, a fan of the actor since ”Moonlighting.” ”Everybody said, ‘Bruce Willis in an action picture?’ Now they’re saying ‘Bruce Willis in a romantic comedy?”’ The answer is yes, and the ”Story”’s about a writer (Willis) and a crossword puzzle editor (Pfeiffer) who attempt a trial separation after 15 years of marriage.

Adding art-imitating-life drama during production was the recent breakup of Willis’ 10-year-plus marriage to Demi Moore and a report of an affair between Pfeiffer’s husband, ”Ally McBeal” creator David E. Kelley, and Calista Flockhart, which surfaced days before production wrapped, was denied by each of the stars, and was later retracted. ”Michelle and Bruce were going through tough times during the film,” says Reiner. ”That added to what was going on on screen.”

No such drama between Wilson and her real-life husband, Tom Hanks. But the actress who plays Pfeiffer’s potty-mouthed friend was a little red-faced over some of her dialogue: ”The night before [shooting], I said to Tom, ‘Just read this. This is what I have to do tomorrow.”’ BUZZ FACTOR: 5 <!–
