Thompson is the Michael Jordan of the electric guitar, with a mastery of the instrument and its vernacular (rock, country, folk, etc.) so complete he pretty much transcends competition. As a vehicle for his fret work and dark view of love, his songwriting is always compelling. On Mock Tudor, it feels more abstract, less muse-racked than his best exorcisms. But he’ll still challenge the faith of anyone who thinks Eric Clapton is God.
