''Also Sprach Zarathustra''

''Also Sprach Zarathustra'' -- The Strauss piece used as ''2001: A Space Odyssey'''s theme is getting a millennial retooling

There’s been no spike in the popularity of primates, monoliths, or evil supercomputers. But, as 2001 approaches, prepare for a big dose of the ditty forever associated with that emblematic year: Richard Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra — a.k.a. the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Jazz musician Eumir Deodato, known for his hit 1973 dance remix of the fanfare, has big plans: Not only has he created a new arrangement of the theme for Beck-like German brass band Mardi Gras.BB dropping in early 2001, but he’s discussing a Sprach rerecording with funksters Kool and the Gang and a third version for MTV. The latest retoolings, says the 56-year-old producer, would be ”a little more hip-hop.” Does that mean he’s adding a rap track? ”Whatever does the job…as long as it’s in good taste.” There goes the Eminem collaboration.
