Music Review: 'Works for Me'

Guitar hero Scofield has been hanging out in the jam band scene, but his newest harkens back to jazzier roots. An all-star, mostly acoustic group — saxist Kenny Garrett, pianist Brad Mehldau, bassist Christian McBride, drummer Billy Higgins — easily gets behind the swinging, saucy feeling of Scofield’s original tunes, ending with the collective improvisation ”Freepie.” It’s a loose-fit finale to a righteously nice, empathetic outing.
