Shallow Hal

What makes for a passable soundtrack — familiar songs by quality artists and one bright discovery? Here PJ Harvey, Sheryl Crow, Lucinda Williams, and Shelby Lynne provide the quality — and the bright discovery is Rosey, whose percussive white-grrrl funk falls somewhere between Dave Matthews and Chaka Khan. Add a stark Neil Young classic, and not even Darius Rucker’s turgid solo debut can drag this solid, if unambitious, album below C level.
