Watts The Deal?

The Ring may be a bone-chilling hit, but that doesn’t make its supernatural plot and inconclusive ending any less confounding. ”I have my theories,” says star Naomi Watts, ”but I’m keeping them to myself.” The Australian beauty is clearly drawn to baffling stories. In her last film, David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, she played aspiring actress Betty Elms, who inexplicably became a different character halfway through. Only now will Watts ruminate on the meaning of that head-scratching flick. ”I’ve always thought the latter part with [alter ego Diane Selwyn] bottoming out was the truth, while the beginning was all a figment of her imagination,” she says. ”Come back in two years and I’ll tell you about The Ring.” — William Keck
