Next big-screen musical redo is ''Urinetown''

First ”Chicago,” then ”Guys and Dolls.” Now, the latest Broadway musical with designs on a big-screen adaptation is ”Urinetown.” Variety reports that Killer Films, the production company behind the 2001 film version of the off-Broadway glam-rock musical hit ”Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” plans to produce the movie of ”Urinetown,” which was nominated for 10 Tonys last year and won three.

The play, which is both a political satire and a parody of other musicals, is set in a post-apocalyptic future where water is scarce, people have to pay to pee, and one evil corporation has a monopoly on toilets. Librettist Greg Kotis and composer Mark Hollman, who won Tonys for their work, will write the screenplay.

”Urinetown” is still running on Broadway, but the movie may face the same problem the show has: With a title like ”Urinetown,” how do you get people to go? Killer’s Pam Koffler tells Variety, ”People had the same concerns when we were making ‘Hedwig,”’ a musical about a German transsexual rock star wannabe. ”But if a musical has great music and songs and as a bonus has great dancing, there’s definitely a way to make a movie out of it.”
