Can Keanu woo moviegoers away from Will?

An action star in an action film takes on an action star in a romance this weekend, as Keanu Reeves’ Constantine attempts to dethrone Will Smith’s smash comedy, Hitch.

Last week, Hitch became the biggest romantic-comedy debut ever, scoring $43.1 million in its first three days. This weekend it’ll see more big bucks, thanks to the Presidents Day holiday. Not counting its extra Monday take, Hitch should gross another $26 million this weekend.

But will that be enough to hold on to the top spot? Perhaps not. Though its title doesn’t say much, Constantine does feature Matrix star Reeves in another thriller, something young male fans won’t be able to resist. Look for Constantine to open with $30 million, good enough for first place.

Two other new releases don’t seem to be amassing much audience interest. The family drama Because of Winn-Dixie, featuring Jeff Daniels and rocker Dave Matthews, and the quasi-sequel Son of the Mask, starring Jamie Kennedy, both open in more than 3,000 theaters, but should see single-digit debuts of around $9 million and $7 million, respectively. That’ll leave Boogeyman to complete the top five, with $5 million in its third weekend.
