It’s 1975, and the Z-Boys — Stacy Peralta (John Robinson), Tony Alva (Victor Rasuk), and Jay Adams (Emile Hirsch) — are the original skate punks. The director, Catherine Hardwicke, stages this docudrama with a gritty, rushing, caught-on-the-fly realism, even as she strives for the mythical youth-rebel excitement of something like 8 Mile.
