Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the band that once famously asked, ”Whatever Happened to My Rock ‘n’ Roll?” has apparently switched loyalties. Shearing layers of dense fuzz off their amps for their third full-length, Howl, they now deliver deeply hypnotic narco-blues that conjure both The Band’s epic pastorals (”Promise” is a standout) and Nick Cave’s Southern Goth (the stripped-bare-and-bleeding ”Devil’s Waitin”’). That the songs are this memorable is an amazing grace note.
