The Big Lebowski

New s — – has come to light,” blathers stoner Jeff ”The Dude” Lebowski (Bridges) in The Big Lebowski, the Coen brothers’ screwball follow-up to their more-weighty Fargo. Not so, unfortunately, in the new special edition, which offers little more than coasters, a collectible bowling towel, and set photographs shot by Bridges. A shame, since Lebowski’s Raymond Chandler-inspired plot, littered with memorable morons, has evolved into a cult classic, thriving with repeat viewings. EXTRAS The Coens, who have humored fans only once with a commentary (The Man Who Wasn’t There), remain silent, except in a making-of doc recycled from the initial DVD release. The only new bonus is an extraneous introduction from a faux film preservationist. The Dude may abide, but it’s difficult not to feel snookered by such an underachieving edition.
