''Gilmore Girls'': News from The CW's press tour

The first ever presentation by The CW at the Television Critics Association’s annual summer press tour went off without a hitch and, actually, was pretty entertaining. Network head Dawn Ostroff started off the day-long event, held on Monday, July 17, at the Pasadena, Calif., Ritz-Carlton, by revealing that the newbie weblet, the result of the merger between UPN and The WB, would launch on Sept. 20 with the premiere of America’s Next Top Model. She called the decision to cancel Everwood ”agonizing,” which made me laugh because that’s how I describe watching One Tree Hill. Oh, and there was a riveting discussion of exactly what color green The CW is using for its logo. Feel my pain, people. Here are some less inane highlights:

Last comic standing Former WB publicist Keith Marder made a surprise appearance on Monday to give his customary joke-filled introductory TCA speech. He got the biggest laugh of the day when he said that The CW’s new slogan would be ”Two wrongs do make a right.”

Game on The most interesting aspect of the panel for the new series — and Girlfriends spin-off — The Game was discovering how completely beautiful the creator of both shows, Mara Brock Akil, is in person. Doesn’t she know that writers are supposed to be unattractive?

Father Haylie 7th Heaven guest star Haylie Duff will become a regular next season and will be attending a seminary. The locusts should be descending upon us any minute now. And we should probably start loading up the ark.

Girls night Gilmore Girls stars Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel made an appearance with new show runner Dave Rosenthal. Both actresses played it coy when asked if this would be the final season, but Graham did offer that, because of the absence of longtime producers Dan and Amy Sherman-Palladino, the new season has felt more collaborative than previous ones. Note to Alexis Bledel fans: Stop sending her envelopes containing locks of your hair. ”I don’t read a lot of fan mail,” said the actress, ”because some of it is very strange.”

Mission for Mars Veronica Mars‘ creator, Rob Thomas, said that next season there will be three mysteries, which will be broken up into nine, seven, and six episodes respectively. He also revealed that he offered EW columnist Stephen King the chance to guest-star on an upcoming episode as a kooky sociology professor. Unfortunately, King was busy.
