An ”indie” road comedy in which the characters are walking, talking catalogs of screenwriter index-card data. The terrific actors (Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, Toni Collette) do what they can to alchemize schlock into gold, but the film is too hermetically cute — and, in the beauty-pageant finale, too smarmy — to be funny.
