The ''Desperate Housewives'' star remembers being the first openly gay character on ''Melrose Place''

My daughter was three months old, and I was delivering pizzas. [When Melrose Place debuted, Matt Fielding] was the only openly gay character on prime-time television. I thought, ”This will prove what a terrific actor I am!” However, people assumed there was no acting required. The first question out of most journalists’ mouths was ”Are you gay?” I never told anyone I was straight…. It was an extraordinarily biased question. Life changed because of the amount of attention the show was given. I took it with a grain of salt — I was never in the eye of the storm because I was Matt, the gay character.
