Twelve

The punk priestess cherry-picks a dozen (mostly) classic rock songs for her first-ever covers set, with bemusingly bland results. From a rote version of the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s ”Are You Experienced?” to a too-faithful romp through the Rolling Stones’ ”Gimme Shelter,” almost nothing on Twelve evokes Patti Smith’s old ”Go, Rimbaud!” chutzpah. Sole exception: her trademark poetic rant on Nirvana’s ”Smells Like Teen Spirit,” which only makes you wish she’d ranted up enough new material for an original album and scrapped this one.
