Rush Limbaugh's 'slut' comments have conservative radio host under fire

UPDATE: It seems Rush Limbaugh may have finally gone too far this time. After the conservative talk-radio host called a Georgetown law student a “slut” and “prostitute” after she testified before Congress about government-funded contraception, a number of companies opted to consider pulling their ads (or already have) from Limbaugh’s program. The Huffington Post reports that mattress store Sleep Train told followers via Twitter, “we made decision to immediately suspend all advertising on that program,” while other advertisers like ProFlowers said they would “reevaluate our marketing plan” and eHarmony assured followers, “We’ve never paid for ads on Limbaugh. We’re looking into the matter of ‘network buys’.”

According to the Chicago Tribune, President Barack Obama has expressed his support to Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke. White House spokesman Jay Carney said at a Friday briefing, “[President Obama] wanted to express his disappointment that she has been the subject of inappropriate personal attacks, and thank her for exercising her rights as a citizen to speak out on an issue of public policy. It was a very good conversation.”

A composed Fluke was a guest on MSNBC’s The Ed Show on Thursday and told host Ed Schultz she was “stunned and outraged” by Limbaugh’s statements. (Limbaugh, who also referred to the Georgetown law students as “babes” on his program and said this country has turned “cruel” and “heartless” and complained that Fluke “wants us to buy her sex.” The conservative pundit also asked listeners regarding Fluke’s testimony, “Have you heard of anything more ridiculous?’ Actually, Rush, now that you mention it…)

“This is historically the kind of language that is used to silence women, especially when women stand up and say these are their reproductive health care needs,” Fluke said during her visit to the show, “I’m not the first woman to be treated this way by numerous conservative media outlets, and hopefully I’ll be the last….This is really inappropriate. This is outside the bounds of civil discourse.” As Schultz — who called Fluke “brave” for speaking out — noted, 75 Democrats have called on John Boehner to denounce Limbaugh (who has had an awfully busy week saying some things) for his comments.
