'Psych' season finale react: 'The plot, unlike your hair, thickens'

Psych-os, now that’s a season finale!

[Warning: Don’t read on if you haven’t seen the season finale of Psych.]

One of many things I love about Psych is how after a fun season of excellent Gus (Dule Hill) and Shawn (James Roday) tomfoolery, the show can still pull back the veil of silly and have some really earnest moments. They did that in a major way during the season finale, “SantaBarbaratown,” which saw Shawn and his dad (Corbin Bernsen) tried in a major way by a case-of-the-week. Over the years, I’ve loved watching Shawn and his dad’s relationship grow, and I loved that despite the challenges in the episode, it ended on a positive note with the two — or so I thought.

In the final moments, Henry headed to the beach to confront his friend Jerry after retiring from the force. It seems the case took a major toll on ol’ Henry, but he was at peace with the decision. (For the record, peace scares me — a happy character is a character in major danger. Thanks for making me a paranoid person, TV.) After packing his things, he went to visit his old friend from the force, but the visit turned sour when his friend revealed that he was involved in dirty dealings. He then pulled out a gun and shot Henry in the chest.

Now, I gotta say, Henry’s not going to die. Period. He can’t. I’m pretty sure I’d weep for all time and Psych‘s main function in my life is to make me smile. See the problem?

Coming back to reality for a moment, I really do think Henry will be alive and well next season, but time will tell. In the meantime, I’m eager to hear your thoughts on the finale. Did you enjoy the Henry-Shawn storyline as much as I did? Or were you more giddy over Shawn and Jules, who, it seems, are on the path toward moving in together. (D’aww.)
