Want to know how to succeed in musical theater? Look no further than the walloping success of the Broadway revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, which will end its fruitful run on Sunday, May 20 after 30 previews, 473 regular performances and count ‘em — three headlining young sensations.

Although closing is a bittersweet announcement for any production, the well-received revival of H2$ recouped its initial $9 million investment in December, meaning that everything else — including the $4 million Darren Criss brought in during his three-week run in January, as well as the moderate success of current star Nick Jonas — is just gravy (after production costs, of course).

The show opened in 2011 with Daniel Radcliffe in the lead role as corporate climber J. Pierrepont Finch. After eight Tony nominations and one win for supporting player John Larroquette, the show welcomed Criss and Jonas (who will evidently not be completing his July 1 contract). The musical’s grosses have steadily declined since April, though, and coupled with the success of all the new productions opening this season, a closing — however unfortunate — seemed imminent if not inevitable.

“We could not have asked for a better vision of this legendary show than Rob Ashford’s joyous production which literally sent audiences dancing out into the streets,” said producer John Gore in a statement. “I am certain the original creators would be proud of this chapter in the legacy of this great show.”
