Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison entering the hologram game

Who would've thought that Tupac Shakur would become one of 2012's leading music industry figures?

Ever since Dr. Dre brought the dead rapper's hologram to Coachella last April, the nation's long-dormant love of holograms has come to the forefront. Not only did Dre toy with the idea of actually taking Faux Tupac on tour with him, but others got in on the virtual-resurrection action: TLC announced plans to project the late Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes on a Jumbotron during live shows, the Jackson Brothers have reportedly kicked around the idea of hitting the road with a Michael Jackson hologram, and an Elvis Presley hologram is already in the works.

And the beat goes on: It's looking like Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and even Marilyn Monroe might all "return" in hologram form soon.

Billboard reports that the Elvis hologram — handled by Digital Domain Media Group, the same team behind the Tupac one — is going to do some next-level stuff.

"This is not repurposing old footage that the world has already seen," Ed Ulbrich, Digital Domain's chief creative officer, told Billboard."We're making totally original and exclusive performances so that fans can have new experiences."

The Hendrix one is also en route (sorry, Andre 3000), thanks to the London-based Musion Company and the approval of Jimi's sister Janie Hendrix, who said of the process: "For us, of course, it's about keeping Jimi authentically correct. There are no absolutes at this point."

But the Jim Morrison one (insert Mojo Risin' joke here!) might creep you out the most. "We're trying to get to a point where 3-D characters will walk around," said the manager of the late Doors singer's estate. "Hopefully, 'Jim Morrison' will be able to walk right up to you, look you in the eye, sing right at you and then turn around and walk away."

Frankly, that sounds horrifying. What if he gains sentience? Hopefully the hologram will be better behaved than the original?

What about you guys? Do you think this trend is getting out of hand, and maybe even a little I, Robotic? Or is it just the thing to get you excited about big arena tours again? Sound off in the comments.
