'Greetings from Tim Buckley' trailer - watch it here

In the new film 'Greetings from Tim Buckley,' which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley stars as the late Jeff Buckley.

But here's where it gets interesting – it's not a biopic.

Instead it's a wistful indie romance, as evidenced by the trailer: more Before Sunrise than Walk the Line. The movie takes place over the course of three or four days leading up to a Brooklyn tribute concert for Jeff's father Tim Buckley, the downtown-famous folk singer with questionable parenting skills. Jeff, at the time still a relative unknown, has reluctantly agreed to perform, and when he arrives he meets lovely bohemian festival intern Allie (the impossibly named Imogen Poots).

The duo tool about the city and fall slowly in love, all while Jeff grapples with his tormented relationship with his absentee father. When he finally takes the stage — and I'm not giving anything away here, it's all in the trailer – his achingly earnest performance (Badgley sings all the songs himself) marks the beginning of a momentous and tragically brief career.
