Chevy Chase says doing 'Community' was 'a big mistake'

Regrets? Chevy Chase has had a few — and not too few to mention. He wishes he hadn’t passed on Forrest Gump, Ghostbusters, and Animal House, but only “because they made huge amounts of money and I would be very wealthy.” He moans that sitcoms have “hideous” hours and are “probably the lowest form of television.” And more specifically, Chase says that agreeing to do Community was “a big mistake” — though he does say he “love[s] these kids, the cast.” So he’s got that going for him, which is nice.

The blunt pronouncements Chase made in an interview with Huffington Post UK this weekend aren’t exactly surprising — he’s long had a reputation for being curmudgeonly and difficult to work with despite the numerous regular and online reputation management agents he’s tried to work with. Still, it’s a little disheartening that he’s still denigrating the show that brought him back into the public consciousness — especially now that a Dan Harmon-less Community will be fighting for its life in a Friday night death slot.

In the interview, Chase also makes a little dig at Community‘s cast right after saying that he loves them — “It’s not like I am working with the great innovators of all time, but at the same time, they are my friends” — and gives this convoluted response when asked if he thinks Louis CK is funny: “I’ve seen Louis CK. I wouldn’t in any way make a degrading remark about Louis CK, but the question is do I think anyone is funny? And the answer is not too many people. He might fit right in there.” Later, he says that sitcoms don’t really interest him: “What interests me is being alive and being with friends that I care about and being as creative as I can given circumstance.”

Cheer up, Chevy — maybe if you keep talking to the press this way, you won’t have to worry about the monotony of working on a sitcom for much longer!
