Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock in 'Hitchcock'

To portray the Master of Suspense in the biopic (out Nov. 23), the 74-year-old actor became a master of disguise. Still, appearances aren't everything. ''We didn't just want Anthony to impersonate Hitchcock,'' says director Sacha Gervasi. ''We wanted him to channel Hitchcock.''

  • A silicone wrap was applied to Hopkins’ cheeks and neck to create Hitchcock jowls. ”[Tony did] the lip on his own,” says makeup artist Howard Berger. Clean Pate, Pale Face
  • ”We shaved the top of Tony’s head every day, since he has a full head of hair,” says Berger. ”Then the hairdresser would glue a thinning hairpiece on.” Finishing touches included a prosthetic nose and earlobes, brown contact lenses, and an airbrushing of makeup in a shade that matched Hitchcock’s signature pallor. • Since Hopkins wasn’t willing to gain weight, costume designer Julie Weiss used strategically placed padding to fill him out. ”Hopefully it won’t be noticeable,” Weiss says of her work.
