Beauty How-To: Lena Dunham's Twiggy-inspired hair and makeup -- EXCLUSIVE

Lena Dunham may have credited Miley Cyrus with inspiring her pixie cut, but for our 2012 Entertainers of the Year photo shoot, the Girls creator’s hair and makeup were an all-out homage to ’60s icon Twiggy.

Hairstylist Rheanne White, makeup artist Brigitte Reiss-Andersen and manicurist Elisa Ferri worked with photographer Ruven Afanador to create a beauty look reminiscent of the Mod-era model. “She loved it, she absolutely loved it,” White says of Dunham’s reaction to her retro transformation. “She was taking pictures of herself and she kept all the makeup to go out that night.”

“[Lena’s] definitely embracing having a short look, she’s really enjoying it,” says hairstylist Rheanne White, who gave Dunham her pixie cut back in September. For the Entertainers shoot, White drew inspiration from hair industry icon Vidal Sassoon, who created Twiggy’s career-making cut. “He basically inspired hair dressers to start lightening it up, loosening those edges up.”

To exaggerate Dunham’s short crop, White applied Lavett & Chin Sea Salt/Texturizing mist before blow drying with a small round brush. “I used a little bit of a very light Magic Move by Supremo pomade to smooth her hair, then teased it to add volume,” White says. “I finished with Serge Normant hairspray, which is excellent because it doesn’t get too lacquered looking.”

New York based makeup artist Brigitte Reiss-Andersen complemented Dunham’s mini-bouffant with strong, geometric makeup. “In the ‘60s, they weren’t afraid to accentuate what we might now consider a problem, to exaggerate droopy eyes, for example,” Reiss-Andersen says. “They would go for it and make them droopier. I gave Lena a droopy shape and that’s what gives the look drama.”

To begin, Reiss-Andersen drew a thick, winged line along the top of Dunham’s lash line with <a href="http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/main/ProductDetail.jsp?PRODUCTprd_id=845524446206378&CAWELAID=1353903701&cagpspn=pla&site_refer=GGLPRADS001″>Giorgio Armani Smooth Silk eye pencil in #4, then traced a heavier line following the crease of the eyelid using Estee Lauder Double Wear gel eye liner in Stay Midnight. “I made the crease appear a little darker by putting taupe eye shadow (the lighter shade in Nars’ Pandora Duo) only in the crease,” she says. “The lines are what give the look that ’60s effect. They have to be very graphic, very precise.”

MAC’s #4 false eyelashes were applied to Dunham’s upper lids, and the lower-lash illusion was created with gel eyeliner and a Chanel Le Crayon Khol eye pencil. “I drew little streaks that look like lashes along the bottom lash line, then added ivory eyeliner to the inside of her lower lids,” explains Reiss-Andersen, who finished the look with a natural pink lip color, MAC’s limited-edition Viva Glam Gaga Lipglass.

When it came to do the actress’ nails, the original plan to create a geometric manicure with patterned decals was scrapped when manicurist Elisa Ferri decided it would clash with Dunham’s floral-print Comme des Garçons dress. “We still wanted something that was graphic, so on one hand, I [painted] two nails white and three are black, and on the other hand, just one nail is [painted] white and the others are all black,” says Ferri, who used Zoya nail polish in Snow White and Raven.
