Early reviews of the ambitious movie adaptation of Les Misérables are mixed, but that didn’t stop the film’s leading ladies from taking some fashion risks at last night’s premiere in New York City.

Anne Hathaway, who plays Fantine, swept onto the red carpet in a Tom Ford black taffeta cape-back dress. The actress’ bondage-style Tom Ford boots — reportedly custom-made using faux leather since Hathaway is a vegan — could hold some serious weaponry. She finished the S&M-inspired look by slicking back her Audrey Hepburn-style pixie and swiping on a bordeaux lip color.

On the other side of the spectrum, Amanda Seyfried, who plays Cosette, braved the rain in an elegant strapless Alexander McQueen dress with a gold embellished bodice and gold-buckled tortoise-shell belt. Seyfried accessorized with an Alexander McQueen clutch, Harry Winston jewels, a braided bun and an extreme, bronze cat-eye.
