The Cover Shoot: 'Smash'

The inspiration and the makeup behind the January 11th cover story

Starry, Starry Eyes
In shooting the women of Smash, photographer Ruven Afanador hoped to channel an Old Hollywood feel — and the look of one very particular icon. ”[Katharine McPhee’s makeup artist] Joanne Gair brought a photo of Sophia Loren [below] to show me,” Afanador says. ”My initial inspiration had a stronger lip, and the eye was more smoky. But I really thought her photo was much better.” So what made Gair think of Loren? ”She had that dramatic eye,” she explains. ”The legendary eyes of the great film stars.”

Hilty loves trying out new looks, and our shoot was no exception. ”She was all about taking it to an exaggerated level,” reports makeup artist Gita Bass. ”We gave her a nude gloss with just a hint of color,” layering a Chanel lipstick (right) with a Tom Ford gloss in Tawny Pink.

”Jennifer’s always fun,” says Hudson’s makeup artist, Oslyn Holder, who wanted to achieve a ”clean and glamorous” look for the shoot. ”Her skin was really glowy, and we used natural colors. Usually the emphasis is on her lips, but her eyes were just amazing.”

Makeup artist Joanne Gair used warm tones to complement, not compete with, the cat’s-eye. ”If you have it all too dark, it becomes all about makeup,” she says. The pair, who’ve worked together for years, did a similar style for McPhee’s album cover. Says Gair, ”She loves this look.”
