Inauguration 2013: What everyone wore

When First Lady Michelle Obama sashayed onto the dance floor with the Commander-in-Chief at last night’s Inaugural Ball, she commanded most of the attention, at least for style watchers.

After much speculation, CNN reports that Mrs. O reportedly chose the ruby colored chiffon and velvet gown by Jason Wu — the same designer she wore for her first dance as First Lady at the Inauguration in 2009 — from a selection of 15 designer dresses. Wu Tweeted that he was “in shock.”

Now that the inaugural festivities are over, FLOTUS’ outfit and accompanying accessories — which included Jimmy Choo heels, Kimberly McDonaldfor Forevermark diamond bangles set in 18K gold as well as a diamond embellished ring by the jewelry designer — will be preserved at the National Archives.

When President Obama took the oath of office in a navy blue suit during a private ceremony in the Blue Room of the White House, the First Lady opted for a custom-made blue Reed Krakoff shift dress and cardigan. Malia, 14, wore the same cobalt H&M dress she debuted at the 2012 DNC convention, and Sasha, 11, chose a pink lace Plenty by Tracy Reese frock with an embellished belt.

Mrs. O turned heads at the inaugural festivities on January 21 in a navy-silk, checkered-patterned coat and dress by Thom Browne. The outfit, from the 2012 recipient of the National Design Award in Fashion Design, was specifically designed for the First Lady, but like most of the designers she wore this weekend, Browne said he wasn’t 100% sure that she was going to wear the outfit until he saw her wearing it. To accessorize, FLOTUS wore J.Crew heels for a religious service in the morning, and remixed the look for the official ceremony with the addition of gloves and a jeweled belt by the retailer and Reed Krakoff boots.

Along with her designer gear, the first lady sported her new headline making bangs, which the President joked were “the most significant event of the weekend,” according to USA Today. “I love her bangs,” he said of the cut the FLOTUS debuted on her new Twitter page, January 17, her birthday.

Before Beyoncé closed the inauguration ceremony with a performance of the national anthem, she arrived on the scene with her husband Jay-Z (in Tom Ford) wearing a sweeping Christian Dior coat over an Emilio Pucci dress. The songstress added pops of color to the look with 80-carat emerald earrings and a 50-carat emerald ring from Lorraine Schwartz (the same jeweler who made her wedding ring) and sported bright nails in an orange-red color called I’m With the Band by NCLA , done by nail artist Lisa Logan.

Clarkson, who was escorted by fiance Brandon Blackstock, bundled up in a maroon Robert Rodriguez Collection tailored wool coat and fuchsia scarf. Apparently, the outerwear didn’t keep her quite warm enough as she performed “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” in frigid temperatures. “Wow ….I was incredibly nervous and cold ha! I just wanna officially thank President Obama for opening for me haha! Just kidding :)” she Tweeted.
