Joey Lawrence explains his Blossom 'Whoa!'

It was the catchphrase heard around the world … or at least around the Blossom community.

At the ripe age of 15, Joey Lawrence was known for two things: his swoon-worthy hair and his one-of-a-kind “whoa.” And now, more than 20 years after Blossom began, Joey has finally revealed the origin of the catchphrase in an interview with HuffPost TV. What was originally written as a typical surfer dude “whoa” was quickly handed to Lawrence as an opportunity when fans of the show didn’t find the former very funny.

“The executive producer came up to me and said, ‘Can you try something else? … People aren’t finding it humorous. I don’t know where that came from! I just tried it once and did this weird thing and people laughed. They laughed tremendously long. We did a second take and they laughed again,” Lawrence said.

And less than 24 hours later, fan girls started to see Lawrence for more than just his beautiful locks.

“It’s so weird that word has transcended 20 years. I can only imagine what that word would have been had social media been what it is today. It took off in the course of one night once it hit the airwaves, but with social media, it probably would have been twice as fast,” Lawrence said.

If we’ve learned anything, it’s that the fame of a Lawrence brother (and a pre-pubescent pronunciation of “whoa”) tops Twitter every time.
