In the fashion world, having one of the world’s most famous women wear one of your designs on the public stage can take you from relative unknown to household name in a matter of minutes. Just ask Jason Wu.

So New York City based Rubin Singer was right to get excited when Beyoncé performed at last night’s Super Bowl halftime show wearing costumes he created. The pop sensation’s cropped leather motorcycle jacket and bodysuit of python, leather, and lace, were both based on looks from Singer’s latest collection. The designer also provided stage costumes for Destiny’s Child bandmate Michelle Williams and 120 backup dancers. (Kelly Rowland wore a leather bodysuit by Emilio Pucci.)

Who is Rubin Singer?

According to the New York Times, the second-generation fashion designer, who counts opera, history and quintessential ’80s brands like Azzedine Alaïa among his influences, first met Beyoncé through her stylist, Ty Hunter, about six years ago. When members of Beyoncé’s camp saw sketches of the designer’s fall 2013 collection — which he dubbed “Valkyrie’s Dominion” — they invited him to submit ideas for the Super Bowl show.

“Everyone’s expecting Beyoncé to go with a major designer,” he told Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn a few days before the big event. “She knows it’s a game-changer — no pun intended.”

Designing for Beyoncé may have landed Singer on the fashion map — and on CNN — but last night wasn’t the first time he’s dressed a celebrity. In fact, it wasn’t even the first time he’s dressed a celebrity for a Super Bowl performance.
