First track from 'Oblivion' score by M83 hits the web -- listen to it here

The electronic music of French band M83 has appeared in dozens of movies, commercials and TV episodes, including ABC’s Revenge, BBC ads for the 2012 Olympics and the striking trailer for last year’s Cloud Atlas. But not until now have any of the band members written music specifically for a film. Anthony Gonzalez of M83 found his first film scoring gig in Tom Cruise-starrer Oblivion, which you can now get a sampling of — one track from the score was released online today.

The sci-fi flick is an appropriate first scoring gig for Gonzalez, given the band’s galaxy namesake and the spacey, celestial quality of their music. Gonzalez created Oblivion‘s score with TRON: Uprising composer Joseph Trapanese. Listen to this synth-driven first track, “StarWaves,” which the other M83 band members also contributed to, below:

The Oblivion soundtrack will be available for purchase on Tuesday, April 9. The movie opens in theaters on Friday, April 19. This marks the second time director Joseph Kosinski has brought in an electronic group to score his film; he also directed the Daft Punk-scored TRON: Legacy.
