WonderCon 2013: Comics, blockbusters, and geek girls

So, what are you wearing to WonderCon? Your BSG finest?

WonderCon’s 27th annual gathering kicks off today in Anaheim, California, where tens of thousands of geek girls and guys, sci-fi enthusiasts, and comic mavens will gather in costumes and glee for the opportunity to preview some of the most anticipated releases of the year. Planned by Comic-Con International, the weekend caters to the most devout fans, and features events and panels that appeal to both their nostalgia and their aspiring creativity. On Saturday alone, attendees can jump from a Pacific Rim preview, to a panel on writing comics for movies, and then close out the day learning why 2013 is going to be the year of steampunk. There are even panels on empathy in comics, queer identity, body image, and how to create a quality Jedi costume.

EW will be on site, reporting live from the convention and bringing you all the juiciest updates. Follow @EWSandraG and @ldbahr for the latest in WonderCon glory, and check out some of the events we’re most excited for.

5. 35th Anniversary of Battlestar Galactica

WonderCon kicks off with a 35th Anniversary celebration and discussion of Battlestar Galactica with Kevin Grazier, Michael Taylor, and a few promised “surprise guests.” They’re also showing a special 35th BSG trailer.

4. Fan Favorite Showrunners

Remi Aubuchon (Falling Skies), Jeff Davis (Teen Wolf), Glenn Mazarra (The Walking Dead), Steven Molaro (The Big Bang Theory), Greg Plageman (Person of Interest), and Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries) will gather to discuss what it takes to run a hit sci-fi or fantasy show. The slate of shows could not be more wildly different from one another and we’re particularly interested to see what, say, Mazarra might have to discuss with Molaro. Perhaps a Sheldon as walker cameo will come out of it!

3. Revolution panel

After a long hiatus, Revolution is finally back on the air and back on track. Elizabeth Mitchell, Tracy Spiridakos, Zak Orth, and co-executive producer David Rambo have promised to answer questions about the blackout, the Monroe Republic, and when the Matheson family will finally be together again.

2. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures preview Pacific Rim and The Conjuring

Guillermo del Toro will be on site to talk about his robots versus aliens blockbuster Pacific Rim. He’s said of the film: “The idea for me is to create a movie that my head would explode if I was 12, but at the same time treat it visually as an adult movie. The texture, the color is treated very seriously.” Insidious director James Wan will also discuss his terrifying-looking new film The Conjuring. Take a look at the awesome trailer here.

1. Much Ado About Nothingpanel

Joss Whedon is set to take the stage with Nathan Fillion, Clark Gregg, Sean Maher, Fran Franz and a host of other stars to discuss his 12-day shoot for his highly anticipated adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic comedy.
