John Mulaney April Fools' Comedy

This April Fools’ Day we decided our readers deserved a good laugh. But since a website can neither get collectively engaged nor pregnant we realized we needed some help. So we interviewed five comedians with upcoming project. Get to know them as they answer our April Questionnaire. Then check out more of their comedy online.

Get to know John Mulaney:

You might know John from the times he’s appeared on Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update or remember his name as one of the writers (along with Bill Hader) of the Stefon character. Or maybe you’re a true comedy fan and have listened to his albums ”New in Town” or ”The Top Part.” If not, get on it. He’s also got a new pilot, filming soon, for NBC.

What he just can’t let go from his act: I have held onto some things that are definitely way too specific. I will sometimes go into long tangents onstage about the final scenes of the movie The Fugitive. Some people know it and some people don’t. I just have to roll the dice. That’s one of those things I’ll get into occasionally. If people get left behind, I feel bad, but I want to get into Devlin MacGregor and the actual framing of Dr. Richard Kimble. And, look, it’s on TNT 800 times a day, so I feel like by now people should be up to speed.

On where Stefon will be in 20 years: In 20 years, I could see him living like Andy Warhol or something. But probably still going to clubs and sleeping in the back of Kim’s Video.

What new fans can expect if they listen to his albums back-to-back: Back-to-back, wow… What if you were driving and you picked up a hitchhiker and he turned out to be a very likable carnival barker and he talked at you for two hours. A charming one, but still.

If he’s ever had podcasts pitched to him: No, no one pitches you doing a podcast; it’s something that comes from within you. No one ever says ”You know, I’d really like you to do a free podcast.” I think it’s assumed everyone will start their own podcast so they never need to offer it to you. I think under Obama, by 2014 every American is supposed to have their own podcast.

Our April Questionnaire:

Do you have any good pranks you ever pulled (besides the best meal ever)? I once came to school and told everyone my house burned down for attention. And I forgot. Like you know at that age I would say something and then 20 minutes later it’d be completely forgotten. I was about 6 years old. And then, you know, I got home from school and all these people had been calling my mom and offering assistance. So it wasn’t so much a prank as it was just a reckless lie that in the end rallied the community around my mother who did not need a new house at all.

April is associated with April showers. What’s the worst you’ve ever gotten caught in a rain storm? I once washed my shoes when I was a kid. I threw my New Balance in the washing machine. And then they seemed dry when I took them out. Then I went out for the day in the summer and there was a huge summer storm and apparently my shoes were still filled with laundry detergent. So I basically had huge soap-sud feet all day, which you know it was pretty cool. I felt like I was in like a YA book. It felt like something that would happen to Maniac McGee. ”The Boy with Soap-Sud Feet” it’d be like a chapter book you’d read in sixth grade.

The April gemstone is a diamond. What is a better song ”Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” or ”Diamonds” by Rihanna? I don’t know ”Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend.” I know that that’s an expression, but I’d have to go ”Diamonds” by Rihanna. What about ”Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes” [by] Paul Simon? ”Diamonds are Forever” sung by Shirley Bassey for James Bond, that’d be the best one.

Titanic Remembrance Day is in April. Do you remember the first time you saw the movie Titanic? I have seen bits of the movie Titanic, but I never saw it. But my girlfriend loves it and has told me that if we ever run into Leonardo DiCaprio anywhere she’s going to make a scene.

Jon Gosselin’s birthday is in April, is terms of reality TV, is Toddlers & Tiaras your favorite show? No, I like it a lot though. Toddlers & Tiaras has been the biggest journey for me in terms of a reality show. Because, you know, you start off you’re watching you’re like ‘who are these horrible moms that are pushing their daughters to do this?’ And then you keep watching it and you start to get frustrated with how bad the kids are in their routines. And by the end I was just yelling at the TV like one of those moms that they have to keep their chin up.
