MTV Movie Awards: Rebel Wilson talks hosting, and the sketch we didn't see

Changing costumes a half-dozen times, making Zac Efron feel uncomfortable, dancing to “The Climb,” “Lose Yourself,” “Girl on Fire” and “Thrift Shop,” referencing Channing Tatum’s butt every 10 minutes, and just generally keeping the energy high during the 2+ hour broadcast of the 2013 MTV Movie Awards was all in a night’s work for first-time host Rebel Wilson.

The Australian actress soldiered on after the show to take a few minutes to talk to the press backstage about performing with her Pitch Perfect co-stars and how she really feels about Russell Crowe. Check out the five best behind the scenes revelations about her performance, her last-minute improvisation, and whether or not she’d want to host the awards again.

1. Getting some moral support from the Pitch Perfect cast

Like many awards show hosts before her, Wilson was most nervous about the big opening number. “We only started rehearsing on Thursday as a full cast. I did a few nunchuck rehearsals before than,” Wilson admitted. But it didn’t really matter. She was just happy to be on stage with her Pitch Perfect co-stars. “I just love those girls and guys so much. Ben flew in from Chicago to do it because he’s in Book of Mormon there. And the girls, they’re so awesome and cool and I just felt really supported. We had our little earpieces in so we could hear the track and before I went on everyone was like ‘go Rebel!’ and I’m like ‘go you guys! Sing well.’ So it’s really good to have that in your ear,” she said.

2. She teases Russell Crowe because she really respects him

Wilson loves a good Russell Crowe joke, but she doesn’t tell them out of cruelty or bitterness towards him because of that early encounter. “I actually think Russell Crowe is a brilliant actor. I think he’s like the best Australian actor. So that’s why I take pot shots at him, because I know he’s so good a few pot shots aren’t going to really hurt. But I would love to do a movie with him. So hopefully I’ll run into him again and he doesn’t say ‘f–k off,'” she said.

3. A last-minute improvisation

When Wilson stepped off the stage with her Koala cam, there was a very set plan with who she was going to approach. Even though she mostly stuck to what they’d planned out, she made an in the moment decision to bring Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) into the skit. “We were actually going to go to the Moonrise Kingdom kids for that and I just saw her looking there and she looked so attentive. We weren’t actually going to go to her. That’s why if you look at the footage you’ll see the Moonrise Kingdom kids actually have a black bag that was a prop bag. But in the split second I just panicked.”

4. The sketch we didn’t see and testing out her material

Clocking in at more than two hours, apparently MTV did make a few calls in order to keep the runtime down. Wilson said: “There was one sketch that you didn’t see tonight that I filmed — I think because they were running long they had to cut it. And it was where I play Jennifer Lawrence’s sister in a true life documentary. So hopefully they’ll release that.” [UPDATE: Watch the video here!] Wilson admitted that even though the “double nipple” sketch may not have gone over very well, a lot of her original material was even raunchier. “I did do a run through of all my material at UCB (Upright Citizens Brigade) and I did actually tone back for tonight,” she said.

5. Would Wilson consider hosting the 2014 MTV Movie Awards?

Wilson isn’t sure about that. “I don’t know if I’d ever host again. It’s pretty nerve-wracking because it’s not like doing a movie where if you stuff up, you can get many takes. I just had one chance. So I don’t know whether I’d do it again,” she said. But, that’s not to say that she didn’t have a great time this year, adding: “I do think the MTV Movie Awards are the funnest awards show.”
